2018 Mazda Mazda3

Best first car

PROS

Ride and Handling
The handling of the car is fantastic. Nimble and fast, handles the roads of Ottawa greatly, and is just a fun car to drive.
Seat Comfort
The seats are very nice and comfortable. The cabin noise can be a bit loud, but all entirely manageable.
Technology and Entertainment
The infotainment system is slightly outdated (given that it is a 2018 model, makes sense that it would be outdated in todays standards) but overall, the safety features like the collision detection, ABS, sensors and whatnot are all handy when having this vehicle. Because it is my first car, I really enjoy being able to know nearly precisely what is going on under the hood.
Interior Space
I like having a small car. I'm not planning to be driving my entire family in one go, so I enjoy having a smaller car. The trunk has lots of space as well and, given that the backseats can fold down, even more space can be made available.
Value
I found the value to be ever so slightly inflated, but given its condition, and milage, it does make sense for the value.
Fuel Economy
Overall, I have found that the car is decently fuel efficient. I do think it is slightly overzealous about how many kilometres it has compared to the fuel level but overall, it is very accurate. Given my current driving habits, I only have to refill the car every 2 weeks or so, just slightly after half a tank.
Styling
It's a simple car, but as my first ever car, I don't think I need all sorts of bells and whistles for a first time personal vehicle. The car just looks nice as well. I can't really describe it.
Reliability
The cars maintenance is good given the price point. I haven't had issues with the vehicle other than after picking up the car, there were some issues with the breaks. Shortly learning that the incorrect break disc was fitted to the car which caused it to make noise. After getting that replaced, the car runs well.

CONS

Seat Comfort
Previously mentioned, the cabin noise can be a little much at times, but its survivable.
Technology and Entertainment
infotainment is a bit old, but better than nothing.
Value
Like I mentioned in the previous "Pros" section, I do think that the cost of the vehicle against the market was slightly above what it should have been, but given the state of the car, low mileage and whatnot, it does slightly redeem itself in that way.
Fuel Economy
Fuel efficiency isn't perfect, but enough where it'll last me for 2 weeks on one fill, and it going to half a tank before refilling.

London Used Mazda Mazda3 Guide

Overview

The Mazda3 stands out in London, Ontario's competitive compact car segment by offering a more premium experience compared to traditional economy cars like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. For London residents commuting between neighbourhoods or making regular trips downtown, the Mazda3's blend of fuel efficiency and engaging driving dynamics proves particularly appealing. The vehicle's available all-wheel drive system (on newer models) provides extra confidence during Ontario winters, while its upscale interior makes daily commutes to Western University or Victoria Hospital more enjoyable.

Recent generations especially appeal to London buyers seeking near-luxury features without the premium price tag of European competitors. Available in both sedan and hatchback body styles, the Mazda3 offers practical versatility for urban living while delivering a more sophisticated driving experience than typical compact cars, making it ideal for both city streets and highway trips to Toronto or Detroit.

Key benefits

Here are the key benefits of choosing a used Mazda3 in London:

• Premium Feel at Mainstream Price: Offers more upscale interior materials and sophisticated design than similarly priced competitors, rivalling entry-level luxury vehicles in build quality and refinement. The attention to detail and quality of materials exceeds expectations for the compact car segment.

• Engaging Driving Dynamics: Stands out among compact cars for its responsive steering and composed handling, making daily drives more enjoyable, particularly noticeable on winding roads like Commissioners Road or Richmond Street. The chassis tuning provides a better balance of comfort and sportiness than most competitors.

• All-Weather Capability: Recent models with available all-wheel drive offer more confidence in adverse weather conditions than typical front-wheel-drive compact cars, a significant advantage during London's winter months.

• Strong Fuel Economy: Delivers excellent fuel efficiency for urban commuting and highway driving, competing well with other compact cars while offering more engaging performance. This efficiency particularly benefits London drivers making regular commutes.

• Advanced Safety Features: Recent models include comprehensive safety technology as standard equipment, competing well against more expensive vehicles and providing peace of mind for daily driving in London's varied traffic conditions.

Potential trade-offs

Here are important factors to consider when buying a used Mazda3 in London:

• Interior Space: Offers slightly less rear seat and cargo space than some competitors like the Honda Civic, particularly in sedan form. The sleek design prioritizes style over maximum practicality.

• Winter Performance: Models without all-wheel drive may require greater consideration for winter tire selection and careful driving during harsh Ontario winters, compared to AWD-equipped alternatives.

• Premium Fuel Recommendation: Some higher-performance models recommend premium fuel for optimal performance, potentially increasing operating costs compared to economy-focused competitors.

• Service Network: While Mazda reliability is strong, London has fewer Mazda-specific service options compared to Honda or Toyota, which could affect long-term maintenance convenience and costs.

• Road Noise: Earlier generations can exhibit more road noise than some competitors, particularly noticeable on longer highway trips to Toronto or Windsor. Recent models have improved significantly in this regard.

• Resale Considerations: While resale values have improved with Mazda's upmarket push, they may not match the strongest competitors like Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla in the London market.
